The Detection K9 Course is delivered as a modular program that allows agencies to focus training where it is needed most. Instruction is built around core areas that develop both foundational detection capability and real-world operational performance.

FOUNDATIONAL SKILLS

The foundational skills module focuses on establishing the K9’s understanding of target odors and building a reliable detection foundation. Training emphasizes odor imprinting, reward association, hunt drive development, and clear final response behaviors to ensure the K9 can confidently recognize and indicate target odors.

INTERMEDIATE SKILLS

The intermediate skills module focuses on strengthening the K9’s detection reliability and independence. Training emphasizes problem solving, blank searches, distraction proofing, and minimizing handler influence to ensure consistent performance across varied and challenging training environments.

OPERATIONAL SKILLS

The operational skills module focuses on applying detection capabilities in mission-oriented environments. Training emphasizes systematic search patterns, vehicle and baggage searches, building sweeps, and odor recognition in complex settings to prepare the K9 team for real-world deployments.

PEOPLE SCREENING

The people screening module focuses on the safe and effective use of the K9 in close-proximity detection environments. Training emphasizes screening moving and static individuals, recognizing odor plumes, maintaining control in crowds, and delivering consistent passive responses in high-traffic areas.

REAL-WORLD INTEGRATION

The real-world integration module focuses on preparing the K9 team for operational deployment under realistic conditions. Training emphasizes scenario-based exercises, low-threshold odor detection, multiple hide searches, environmental challenges, and decision-making to ensure mission readiness in dynamic environments.
